With the initial goal of optimizing ASM’s production processes, the pandemic created an entirely new set of challenges for the company in 2020. KINEXON reacted quickly an presented a reliable solution to ensure safe distancing for essential ASM employees. With KINEXON SafeZone, the world’s most trusted digital solution to prevent the spread of COVID-19 through contact warning and contact tracing was born.
ASM’s built-to-order concept follows a tight schedule. All modules of a machine are mounted manually at separate production islands. ASM was looking for an early warning system to identify bottlenecks and problems in order to optimize production capacity in real time.
In order to track the production process and worker utilization within the production islands in real time, ASM needed a localization solution that is reliable and centimeter-precise. At the same time, they expected the availability of individual configurations within the solution. In contrast to a BLE solution that was simultaneously piloted, KINEXON delivered an ultra-precise UWB RTLS solution powered by its location-based automation platform to fulfill these requirements.
After equipping assets and assembly carts with the KINEXON ePaper Tag, and workers with KINEXON Worker Tag, the location-based automation platform could detect tangible optimization opportunities within weeks: it analyzed how the number of assembly carts needed can be reduced and how to manage production assets at the main assembly line more efficiently.
A roll-out of KINEXON’s solution is currently planned for three more ASM locations.
4 different types of machines are built on the main assembly line. The tracking of each individual assembly step for each machine type provides ASM with unprecedented transparency via the KINEXON RIoT platform. This allows the team to optimize each process, detect issues early on, and identify bottlenecks for an ideal process flow without unproductive downtimes.
Workers along the assembly line are equipped with the KINEXON Worker Tag. In conjunction with the order tracking, ASM can calculate and visualize the degree of value added in real time. This enables ASM to plan and optimize their resources globally across plants.
Assets and load carriers are equipped with UWB-enabled KINEXON X‑Tags. This provides full transparency about their precise locations, eliminating costly search times and highlighting saving potentials when it comes to resource allocation.
With the KINEXON ePaper Tag, ASM is leveraging the unique combination of ultra-precise UWB localization and interactive e‑ink displays for smarter production. The ePaper Tag allows employees to proactively communicate updates, warnings, and upcoming process steps in real time between assets and the RIoT software via button press.
Digitizing production papers creates a full digital thread about all production steps, eliminating the need for manual and error-prone paper. Paperless Production with the ePaper Tag optimizes communication and process quality by providing information about upcoming production steps as well as digital timers, which ASM uses to guarantee appropriate drying times for glue on circuit boards.
