COMPETE Vision: How KINEXON is Transforming Camera Tracking Technology and Basketball Analytics

Author: Jonas Bohner

As a basketball coach, you already know how vital the stat sheet is for you, your athletes, and the coaching staff. This might include box score stats such as rebounds, assists, and fouls. But most importantly, everyone is traditionally tracking shot statistics – points scored, 2‑point vs. 3‑point shots, makes vs. misses. Considering how shot statistics are tracked, what if you could capture and analyze the data without needing a wearable device or recording by hand?

Video recordings are the newest way coaches are getting basketball analytics from practice or games.

KINEXON’s new shot tracking solution, COMPETE Vision, is unlocking a new era of analytics in basketball. It transforms video footage from a stationary camera to record practices and games, producing an added layer of data.

After player profiles are created within the platform, the camera tracking solution will automatically identify athletes and their shot statistics from a sideline camera — without needing a wearable device. Coaches upload practice and game video to KINEXON’s cloud service, where it is processed and converted into next-gen insights. COMPETE Vision enables coaches in both men’s and women’s basketball across all levels of competition to experience the value of shot statistics.

Automating Shot Statistics

Basketball analytics are used by coaches, players, and trainers to find weak spots in a players game.

When the 3‑point line was introduced in the late 60s, basketball changed forever. Recording shot statistics became more essential once there was a need to document 3‑point vs. 2‑point attempts. Fast forward to today’s game, athletes have elevated their shooting skills and shot selection across the NCAA, NBA, and WNBA in recent years.

Now COMPETE Vision is improving basketball analytics once again, and providing several advantages, including:

  • Automated shot statistics
  • Shot charts
  • Heat maps

They provide coaches with first-hand insights into their athletes’ shooting performance in different areas of the court based on practice or game video footage. There is no need for assistant coaches or graduate assistants to manually count shots or engage in laborious film sessions with hand-written notes of shot locations.

Analyzing shot statistics allows you to better understand preferred shot selection and help determine strengths and weaknesses. Whether a player is efficient at scoring from the top of the key or having trouble knocking down the corner three – COMPETE Vision provides these insights right at your fingertips.

Session Workload & Intensity

A basketball player can mimic the intensity he or she feels in a game by using analytics to increase or decrease the intensity.

In addition to shot statistics, COMPETE Vision will continue KINEXON’s legacy of providing insightful analysis to evaluate session workloads and performance.

This information can help you make many decisions, including:

  • How to plan practices that will prepare your players for the demands of a game.
  • Help prevent overtraining by monitoring their workloads throughout the season.
  • Create return-to-play protocols for injured players based on practice and game data.

COMPETE Vision does not replace your current KINEXON performance-tracking system (if you are already using one); it enhances it.

Introducing "Shot Load" – Combining Shot Stats & Performance Data

AI algorithms are now being applied to video recordings to provide basketball analytics such as shot load.

There will always be athletes who do not train during practice to mimic in-game demands. This could include the rhythm and speed of the game, fatigue prior to the shot, and the shot type (e.g., creating a shot off the dribble vs. a catch & shoot, defensive pressure, or a contested shot). While not all demands and constraints can be replicated during practice, there are many varied factors coaches can try to replicate that would mimic the demands of the game.

Traditional stationary form shooting has its benefits, but most shots from separate locations on the court are often not practiced at game-like intensities. With Shot Load, KINEXON introduces a first-of-its-kind metric that enriches shot statistics by combining them with traditional performance metrics to evaluate the intensity and load just before the shot.

By differentiating and categorizing shots (including makes and misses) into low, medium, and high shot loads, coaches can gather a more accurate picture of an athlete’s shot selection and whether acute and chronic fatigue might have affected the athlete’s shooting efficiency. These new insights will help coaches create and plan training drills more efficiently to replicate game-like scenarios and increase skill acquisition and development specificity.

Camera Technology: Player & Ball Tracking, Data Collection and Uploading

A coach sets up a video camera for basketball. The video will be uploaded to an app and analyzed by AI which provides analytics.

For data collection, KINEXON offers two options. You can use your own camera, or KINEXON can provide one. Our software-only solution uses existing videos from third-party camera providers like PlaySight.

Option 1: If you already have a camera that fulfills basic quality requirements, we will use your existing camera and provide you with our proprietary software. These cameras need to be stationary and placed at half-court, offer a panoramic view, and typically shoot in 8k or 4k minimum. The video’s quality matters, but KINEXON’s support staff will assist in evaluating your video quality to ensure it can be analyzed after the video is uploaded.

Option 2: If you do not have a camera, you can use the Labpano camera provided by KINEXON. A coach (or another staff member) will need to manually set up the camera for every session, which only takes about two minutes. Once your practice or game is over, you manually trigger the upload to the cloud with just one click of a button.

You can manage your team roster and analyze all incoming data via our brand new COMPETE Vision platform. Initially, the system will require you to identify video snippets of your training session or game to assign them to your athletes. After that, coaches will receive shot statistics and performance data for each athlete and their whole team.

A New Era of Analytics in Basketball

A player takes a shot while a coach uses basketball analytics to point out strengths and where he has the best chance of making them.

At KINEXON, we strive to help our teams be more successful on and off the court to ultimately win more games. Technological innovation and data automation have always been at the forefront of our work. We challenge the status quo of how athlete performance in basketball will be evaluated by utilizing state-of-the-art camera tracking technology.

COMPETE Vision will provide next-gen basketball analytics with shot statistics and shot load. The statistics dashboard is the centerpiece of the new application. Coaches can review and analyze all the information calculated by KINEXON’s proprietary technology and AI algorithms.

It’s a make-or-miss league.” This commonly heard phrase, repeated by coaches, players, and analysts worldwide, encapsulates the simple truth about basketball: if your shots go in, your team wins, and if they don’t, you lose. After countless hours of scouting, scheming, and statistical analysis, all the hard work only pays off if the ball goes through the basket.

With KINEXON’s new shot tracking solution, we’re here to optimize your shooting drills and routines, ensuring your players are physically prepared to execute in the moments the game will be decided.
