Sports Analytics For Women Athletes: FC Viktoria Becomes a KINEXON and AWS Flagship Team

Sports analytics leaders, KINEXON Sports and AWS, are collaborating to promote equality in sports technology for women, with Viktoria Berlin as their inaugural flagship team”. They aim to empower female athletes by creating tailored sports analysis software and load management data. Concurrently, Viktoria Berlin is assisting in refining these products to cater to the needs of women athletes globally.

Why Viktoria Berlin Is Helping to Develop Sports Analytics for Women Athletes

With former German international player and two-time world-cup winner Ariane Hingst among them, the six founders are aiming for nothing less than a lighthouse project” in women’s football. Athletically, they aim for a promotion to the Bundesliga by 2027. At the same time, the Berlin club focuses on equality and fairness for women in sports.

An ambitious project on and off the pitch with the goal to improve the visibility of women’s football and raise awareness to the next level. A new way of thinking about the sport”- if a club is ideally suited to do just that, it is Viktoria Berlin.

As a team, we not only aim for promotion to the Bundesliga but also to change and improve women’s sports in Germany sustainably. Compared to men’s sports, there are still significant areas for improvement in terms of infrastructure, also, when it comes to sports technology. That is why we are excited to support KINEXON’s and AWS’s initiative to develop a tracking product specifically tailored to the needs and demands of women.

Lisa Währer, Managing Director and Co-Founder at FC Viktoria Berlin

The people behind Viktoria Berlin work in business, marketing and sports and, therefore, are not only digitally conscious but also have a great feel and creative ability for trends: ideal conditions to spot and develop new, innovative applications for our data on and off the pitch that women’s sports will benefit from noticeably.

What Is a Flagship Team?

A player tracking device is put in place by a sports data analyst to help improve player performance for men and women athletes.

Being a flagship team in a study typically refers to being recognized as a leading or prominent group within a particular field of study. It signifies that the team is at the forefront of research, innovation, and expertise in their area of focus. Flagship teams are often characterized by their high level of productivity, impact, and influence on the field.

The player tracking systems, sports analysis software and sports science team provided by KINEXON will be combined with AWS’s sports data experts. We’ll support all of our flagship teams on their way to more efficient and effective use of player performance technology.

In return, the companies learn about the demands and potentials of those teams and individual athletes. The common goal: closing data and knowledge gaps and finding innovative ways to develop live sports data on and off the pitch.

Who and How Is Sports Data Supposed to Help?

A FC Viktoria Berlin player practices under the watchful eye of her coach, while wearing a vest that is collecting sports data.

Women’s football teams increasingly implement player tracking technologies into their daily training routines. With KINEXON, Viktoria Berlin will now also rely on sports data that contributes to reaching the players’ maximum performance levels and, therefore, can make a difference in the quest for promotion.

Developing player performance in an innovative, efficient and healthy way is vital for the road to the Bundesliga without investing in top players. Through sports data analytics, it is possible to quantify potentials, overload risks and development tendencies. Based on these metrics, KINEXON will help the coaching staff to develop players individually to enable every woman athlete to reach her maximum performance level.

Working together with women’s teams in top leagues in football, basketball, handball and volleyball, we have a wide range of knowledge and reference data we can rely on. Plus, through our joint initiative with AWS, we keep identifying new features, applications and improvements for our products and analysis to pointedly live up to the demands of women in top-level sports.

Jana Hubel, Sports Science Consultant at KINEXON

How player data can help Viktoria Berlin beyond training planning to complete their mission to change women’s sports sustainably is another question we would like to study jointly.

Viktoria Berlin not only questions the status quo but also thinks many things in sports freshly. I am convinced that we at KINEXON will also benefit from that approach, and the collaboration will challenge and facilitate our creativity and innovation.

Where is Viktoria Berlin In The Standings?

FC Viktoria Berlin is helping change the way sports scientists view women's sports by using sports data analytics that are geared towards female athletes.

Currently, Viktoria Berlin sits at the top of the Regionalliga Nord-Ost and has a great chance to get promoted to the 2. Bundesliga. The club’s clear-cut, long-time goal is to establish itself in the 1. Bundesliga.

Beyond the Bundesliga, a shared vision of playing a role internationally in a few years is in view. Additionally, the club actively campaigns to empower women’s football in Berlin and aims to become an attractive central place for women’s players in the region.

How Will Two Sports Analytics Companies Collaborate?

Sports scientists from KINEXON and AWS review data from a practice that will help develop sports performance software with a woman athlete in mind.

When two leading sports analytics companies come together, great things happen.

As a flagship team of KINEXON’s and AWS’s joint initiative, the Berlin club will receive a mobile, GPS-based tracking system for player-data live tracking. Plus, KINEXON sports science consultants will support and guide the team.

In close coordination, Viktoria Berlin will test new features from the collaboration between KINEXON and AWS and provide constant feedback to help develop the products and tailor them to women’s demands — a first and central aspect: the menstrual cycle and its effects on women’s performance.

About the Women's Sports Initiative at KINEXON

A lot of work is being done to improve female sports performance. Volleyball is just one of the sports using performance software that's designed for women athletes.

A large part of sports-scientific studies, hence, the foundation of sports-scientific training planning and sports technology, is based on men. Consequently, women and men are treated equally, despite specific demands often being blatantly obvious.

KINEXON and AWS challenge this status quo. Both companies are among the leading providers of live sports data analysis and are convinced teams have enormous potential, which they can realize through pointed, women-specific load management.
