What Recent Developments in Football Are Most Significant?

There were two very important developments in football recently, and KINEXON Sports technology is playing a major role.

MunichMar 16, 2018

This month started of with two major developments in football.

The International Football Association Board (The IFAB) approved the use of video assistant referees (VARs). This represents a new era for football and helps to increase integrity and fairness during critical situations.

According to The IFAB, the philosophy of VARs is minimum interference – maximum benefit’ and aims to reduce unfairness caused by clear and obvious errors’ or serious missed incidents’ in relation to goals, penalties, direct red cards and mistaken identities.

The second big step has been the approval of the use of electronic and communication equipment in the technical area, for tactical/coaching purposes and player safety. This decision is particularly important, as confirmed in a recent interview with Christofer Clemens, Head of DFB-Scouting and Match Analysis/Senior National Team at DFB.

Christofer Clemens sees the use of real-time data in the technical area as a real benefit, because it allows to validate the decision-making processes much more objectively. He also states the importance in the context of growing demands towards the players in international football today.

According to Mr. Clemens, the future of data analysis will lie in the use of real-time positional data and in modelled machine learning during matches. Taking also the ball into account will provide information for all relevant constellations in the context of the Laws of the Game. The correct data, when used with the correct technology and when interpreted correctly, can have a major impact, and ultimately help improve the quality of the game.”

This is exactly where KINEXON technology comes into play: helping to improve athlete monitoring, injury prevention and tactical analysis through precise and real-time localization of athletes and the ball.
