Handball Inside”, a leading handball magazine, has featured an article on Big Data in handball. The article reveals that the Deutsche Handball Bund (DHB) and the Institute for Applied Training Science (IAT) are working together to test new technologies that can track players’ positions, movements and workloads indoors. 

One of these technologies is KINEXON Sports, a pioneer in indoor tracking. Unlike outdoor sports such as American Football and Baseball, which can use GPS for tracking, indoor sports such as handball need different systems, as GPS does not work indoors.

Why It's Important to Understand Player Tactics, Technique and Workloads

Team handball coaches are using sports technology and inertial movement units to gain insights into their players.

New technologies such as indoor tracking systems can offer many benefits for handball. Former THW Kiel coach Dirk Büsch says that positional data can help to see a scene from different perspectives and understand why a player made a certain move. 

Another important aspect is the analysis of players’ workloads, such as how much energy they spend due to physical contacts with the opponents. These contacts can affect the players’ speed, acceleration, and reaction time. Mr. Büsch says that this kind of data is very useful for coaches, especially in the final minutes of the game. Indoor tracking systems like KINEXON ONE make these analyses possible.

KINEXON Sports is also working on integrating sensors into the ball. So far, results have been very promising. Mr. Büsch believes that ball tracking will enable them to analyze the spin and thus will help them to develop mathematical models for identifying the perfect spin for specific positions.

Sports technology is being used more and more in team handball to track players and provide insights to coaches and broadcasters.

The article also reveals that TV broadcasters are using indoor tracking systems to enhance the viewing experience of handball. They believe that adding overlays such as distance, jump height, velocity and acceleration advantages will make the sport more appealing for spectators.
